Why not first past thepost?? Because Preferential voting also followed in presidential elections

First thing
There needs to be more clarity in the question with ( Indian Presidential Election)
As we are studying Indian Polity and assuming the Question is of Indian President

  1. First Past the post method is used when we need a winner with simple majority and have a larger electorate.

  2. As President is a representative of the whole nation but only a nominal head, it would not make sense to involve such a huge electorate.

  3. Hence elected representatives using a system of proportional representation with an equal voting power achieves both the above mentioned purposes

  4. Moreover if the election is through first past the post system , there would be a conflict of power equations between nominal head(President) and the real head( Prime Minister) in Indian Polity.
    Hope it answered your query
